Hornby, 'The Bournemouth Belle' Train Pack, containing, Britannia Class 4-6-2 Locomotive and tender, No 70009 'Alfred the Great', in BR early green along with 3 of the brand new 12 Wheel Pullman coaches NOTE: this example has a couple of faults two of the three Pullmans have battery boxes off ( they are in the box and will need re-attaching ( minor) also there are two Car 96, ( no brake in box ) and the buffers on the loco tender are slightly offset ( only really apparent when viewed from below) The Bournemouth Belle train service was first inaugurated by the Southern Railway in 1931 and operated until nationalisation in 1948 with the service being postponed during the Second World War. However, after 1948 the service was subsequently operated by British Railways until withdrawal on the 9 July 1967. Initially the service operated out of Waterloo Station calling at Southampton, Bournemouth and Weymouth but was later amended so that it terminated at Bournemouth West. This Hornby Bournemouth Belle pack features a BR Britannia Class locomotive, "Alfred the Great", plus three 12 wheel Pullman Cars simulating part of the service as it would have been seen in the early 1950s. An additional pack containing three further 12 wheel Pullman cars is also available to extend the train. Owing much to the GWR Star the Collett designed Castle Class locomotives first started to leave the Swindon Works in 1924. "Caerphilly Castle", the first of the Class first appeared at the Empire Exhibition in the same year. These powerful 4-6-0 locomotives were renowned for hauling heavy trains at high speeds and remained on top link express duties until they were replaced by diesels in the early 1960s. On June 8, 1932 No. 5000 covered the 77 miles from Swindon to London in 56 minutes with 39 miles of the run being made at 90 mph which was quite an achievement at the time. So successful was the design of these locomotives that they continued to be built until 1950
