Ordered in 1955 by the BTC (British Transport Commission) with delivery of the 1st loco in Nov 1957, The fleet was originally destined for East Anglia, however due to the Clean Air Act of 1956, the locomotives were allocated from new to London Devons Road (Bow) allowing Steam to be phased out from a number of areas of London. Used for cross-London freights and empty stock workings, a successful design that worked on until freight traffic declined with most of the class withdrawn by 1971.
