Delivered new from Brush works in 1968 as a possible design for the British and export markets, it was then the most powerful diesel locomotive in the world with 4,000hp on tap. Used on a variety of freight traffic until British Railways decided the axle loading was too high, so in 1969 'Kestrel' was re-bogied with modified Class 47 bogies. Later that year saw the locomotive on regular passenger turns working out of Kings Cross. After an engine overhaul in 1970 'Kestrel' was retuned to freight duties, which is where it stayed until Brush sold the locomotive to the USSR in the summer of 1971.
