Hornby R2896xs, A4 Class 4-6-2 Locomotive, 60001 'Sir Ronald Matthews' DCC SOUND FITTED, ocomotive is in British Railways Brunswick green with late crest, without valances, a non corridor tender and a Double chimney, in 1937 and to celebrate the Coronation of GeorgeVI, the LNER inaugurated the "The Coronation" service which operated between London, Kings Cross and Edinburgh, Waverley. It was based on the very successful "Silver Jubilee" service which had commenced operation in 1935. There were five new LNER A4 locomotives that were assigned to "The Coronation" and they were all named after Commonwealth countries. This year more of the five locomotives have been chosen to add to the collection and each will be produced in a limited edition of 1000 pieces, complete with an authenticating certificate. Weighing in at 166 tons in full working order, with their6'8" driving wheels and 250 psi boilers, the mighty three cylinder A4s had a tractive effort of 35,445lbs. Although some A4s were built with single chimneys, all were eventually fitted with double chimneys and a number were fitted with corridor tenders to facilitate crew changes on the move. Gresley, being a keen ornithologist, is believed to have influenced the naming of the second batch of Class A4 locos using the names of the faster flying British birds. Owing much to the GWR Star the Collett designed Castle Class locomotives first started to leave the Swindon Works in 1924. "Caerphilly Castle", the first of the Class first appeared at the Empire Exhibition in the same year. These powerful 4-6-0 locomotives were renowned for hauling heavy trains at high speeds and remained on top link express duties until they were replaced by diesels in the early 1960s. On June 8, 1932 No. 5000 covered the 77 miles from Swindon to London in 56 minutes with 39 miles of the run being made at 90 mph which was quite an achievement at the time. So successful was the design of these locomotives that they continued to be built until 1950 Please note. there is VAT included in this price, for our oversea's non EEC customers VAT will be deducted
