Hornby Railways RXXXHornby Railways RXXX Ref: HO400257
Hornby, the contents of a small starter style train set, which is missing its outer box - all that's here really is the inner polystyrene tray. The set comprises a GWR 0-6-0 Pannier Tank Locomotive, No.2788 in Great Western plain green livery. This is the half-cab variety. Along with the loco are two short wheelbase 4-wheel Coaches in chocolate and cream, a Great Western style Brake Van no.56261 "Reading" in dark grey, a "Shell" Tank Wagon no.3, and a Great Western 12 ton Open Wagon. The open wagon has had finescale style metal wheels fitted. Condition of contents is B, everything is dusty and needs a good clean, but apart from that it is OK.
Price: £42.50 / $65.88

Hornby, "Eurostar" Trainset, which contains a 4-Car Eurostar train, a Power Car, a Dummy Power Car and two articulated Coaches. They are in the Eurostar off-white and yellow livery with Eurostar logo to the cabs of the two power cars and also to the window surrounds on the coaches. This version of the Eurostar is in HO gauge and was made for Hornby in Slovenia - it was actually made by Joueff. About 3,500 were sold. There is nothing else included with the set - all the track, controllers, paperwork etc are missing. The models have been used quite extensively and are quite grubby. But they appear to be in working order and there doesn't seem to bee any damage - with the exception of a couple of the glazing parts on the power car, which have fallen into the model. Overall, I would grade them as B. The box is B to B+, it's intact and is actually quite a nice box.

Hornby, Train Set "Express Freight Set". This was a set that was made for the Australian market in1997 and 1998, with a total of 10,000 being made. Quite a number of items in this set are unique to the Australian market. Starting with the loco, which is a S Class Co-Co Diesel Electric loco in VR (Victoria Railways) blue in reasonable condition, it has been very lightly used and there are no marks or blemishes with the exception of the roof which appears to have a biro or some other mark, although I think this will clean off. Overall condition is B. There's an Open Wagon "Coal Allied Industries Ltd" in grey; a Kelloggs Van; a Peter's Milk Tanker Wagon in white; a CIG Liquid Oxygen Monobloc Tanker Wagon in white; and finally a Brake Van no.739ZL in orange. General condition of all the rolling stock is B, it's mostly been used, but is generally tidy and there are no major marks or damage. Included with the set is an oval of track, a power clip and an uncoupling ramp. As far as I can tell, the only item missing is a cardboard tunnel. The inner tray is condition B- to B, showing signs of wear. The lid is tatty - two of the corners have parted and the other two have been repaired - but the cellophane is still intact, and I would only grade the lid as B-.

Hornby Railways Electric Train Set "Express Freight". This is a set which was made in the UK but designed for the Australian market, which was were it was shipped. The set was made in 1977 and 1978 only and had a production run of around 10,000. This set included the Commonwealth Co-Co Diesel Electric Locomotive in Victoria Railways blue and yellow livery and this particular one is probably B+, possibly even a bit better - it's in very nice condition. Also included in the set are six items of rolling stock and, according to the illustration on the lid, there should only be five. There is actually a slot in the inner tray with a sticker that says extra storage space but somebody has kindly put an extra wagon in. So we have six including two different Coal & Allied Industries Ltd open wagons - one in dark grey and one in light grey. The dark grey one is condition B+, maybe a bit better and the light grey one is a B, which is showing signs of having been used. There are two tanker wagons, a long wheelbase Monobloc tanker "CIG Liquid Oxygen" which is in white and is a little bit on the grubby side. It's all intact and would require cleaning. Also a short wheelbase tanker wagon with plastic ladders "Peters Milk" which is in white - well currently it's off white as it is a little bit on the grubby side and would benefit from a clean. Further we have a long wheelbase closed van " McVities Bake a Better Biscuit" which is in condition B+. It doesn't look like it's been used very much, however there is a slight problem with one of the wheel sets. There is currently a fracture on one of the wheels, it does actually run and I'm sure it would go for quite some time but it's something that might be needed to be looked at. Finally, on the rolling stock, there is a brake van or caboose, No.683ZL in maroon with a grey roof. It's supposed to have a chimney but this example is missing the chimney. General condition B to B+. Finally, there is an oval of track, a power clip and an electric transformer which currently has an Australian style plug fitted which would have to be changed. The transformer is obviously not tested. The inner tray is condition B, it's a little bit grubby but it's all there. The lid is rather nice and all the corners are intact and there are no marks or damage to the lid and I would grade that as a B, possibly slightly better. Overall a very interesting set made over 25 years ago. A hard-to-find set.

Hornby, Electric Train Set "Trans Australia Set". This set was manufactured in the UK and shipped out to Australia. The set contained a Class F9 Co-Co Commonwealth Diesel Electric Locomotive "Commonwealth Railways" in maroon and silver livery, a silver Transcontinental Passenger Dining Car, a silver Transcontinental Baggage car and a silver Transcontinental 1st Passenger Car. Along with the rolling stock is an oval of track, a right hand point, a battery controller, a power clip, an uncoupling ramp and two sets of operating instructions - one for the train set and one for the locomotive. When the set was new there would have been a cardboard tunnel and a current issue catalogue - both of which, in this example, are missing. The locomotive is condition B+ to A-, it looks like it's been test run but that's about it. The only unfortunate thing is that it's currently running as a Bo-Co, one of the axles on the driven bogie is missing. The locomotive is in working condition, it picks up fine and it does run but it's missing this axle and a set of wheels obviously. The coaches are all B+, very nice tidy, clean condition. The track is showing signs of a little tarnishing which is not unusual considering the age. Everything else is in reasonable condition. The inner tray is probably a B. The outer lid is intact apart from one corner that has come apart. It's showing signs of wear and the cellophane is a bit grubby. It would probably benefit from a little clean but it's an interesting set and it's certainly hard to find in the UK. It was made by Hornby in 1977 and 1978,
