Gem Loco KitGem Loco Kit Ref: KIT100091
Gem, 00 gauge white metal locomotive kit of an LNWR 4-4-2 Tank Locomotive, No.1589 in LMS black livery. The model is fitted with a Triang style chassis and is in working order. It could probably do with a service. It has been finished to a reasonable standard. The chimney and one of the number plates are very slightly lop-sided. The paint finish is probably less than reasonable and has been rather heavily applied - but it's black, and black is black! It could easily be weathered though. An interesting model. Condition is B- to B. Comes in its original box and with a set of instructions.

DJH, OO gauge white metal kit-built model of a 0-4-0 Barclay Saddle Tank Locomotive, No.24 "Lady Jane" in blue and black with red buffer beams and slightly weathered motion. The loco currently has a coupling bar at one end and no coupling - with the exception of a hook - at the other. The loco runs smoothly and quietly and is geared to go quite slowly. Model has been built to a reasonable standard. There are one or two chips to the paintwork, particularly on the roof. An attractive little model - and I rather like it. Condition is B to B+. Box condition is B+.

DJH K30.DJH K30. Ref: KIT100096
DJH, White Metal Kit Built Model of a British Railways Peppercorn A1 Class 4-6-2 Locomotive and Tender, No. 60161 "North British". Locomotive is finished in British Railways lined green livery. The tender which is a none corridor type carries the lion over wheel early emblem. This is a kit built model with scale wheels. Built to a very high standard, it is a lovely paint finish. It appears to be etched brass name plates with crest and it carries again a metal headboard which reads "The Elizabethan". It carries shed codes 64B and also etched metal works plates below the running numbers on the cab sides. The model has full back head detail. The brass framing on the drivers windows are picked out. The model itself is finished to a super standard. There are no couplings fitted to the loco. It would be something you would have to make an arrangement yourself on the tender which shouldn't be too difficult. The only point I would raise on an otherwise completely professionally finished and painted model is the running number has been incorrectly applied to one side only. One side is correct 60161 the other side reads 61061, obviously the builder was slightly dyslexic. If you can live with it it is fine if you can't then it would have to be changed. Model comes in its original box.
Price: £175.00 / $309.75

Finescale model, built from brass and white metal, constructed to a very good standard, with a wealth of detail. Very good runner and very heavy. The only point: the tender when held against the light has a small depression in the brass sheet. Minor issue on a quality model. Condition B+ Box B

Nu Cast, OO gauge kit built model of a Great Western 1366 0-6-0 Saddle Tank Locomotive, No.1364 in British Railways plain black livery with late crest to the tanks. It's a well-made model, which has a scratch-built chassis using a Romford Bulldog motor and 40:1 gears. It features correct 10-spoke wheels, which apparently are now unobtainable. The model has been very slightly weathered and looks absolutely superb. The detail is complete even to a bucket hanging from the rear lamp irons. The couplings are similar to modern Bachmann couplings. The model is in lovely condition - I would grade it as B+. It comes in a non-original box, which is in condition B.

There is a wealth of extra detail, plenty of pipework, plumbing etc. It is fitted with proper buffer beam details to the front end including screw link couplings. The tender has a Tri-ang type bar coupler at the rear. It has full back head detail. It has been built as I said previously to a very high standard and the paint finish is also extremely good. I would grade it as a B+ or better in an original box which is condition B.

The model has been built from a Tech-Cad kit, I understand, and has been finished to a high standard. It has been lightly weathered. The model has plenty of detail - fitted steps, buffer beam detail, full cab detail, screw-link couplings at both ends and a sort of modern Hornby/Bachmann style coupling fitted to one of the bogies. It picks up from both bogies and has a Maschima power bogie. It is in good working order. Condition is B to B+. Comes in a slightly battered Tech-Cad box.

This is an all-metal super detailed kit-built loco running on a proprietary Triang chassis, which I'm guessing is probably the 3F/4F chassis. It's actually quite a nice job - the paint finish and build quality are reasonable. Overall, I would grade it as B to B+. It has a certain amount of detail including handrails and some pipe work that appeared on this loco. The model is in working order if a little noisy. It comes in an original box, which is in condition B to B+. Comes with instructions.

Loco is made and painted to the highest possible standard. The prototype was allocated variously in the South West - working on the Padstow branch as well as the Somerset and Dorset. Millholme Models, a white metal kit-built model of an ex-LMS Patriot Class 4-6-0 Locomotive and Tender, No.45517 in British Railways lined green livery with the late BR emblem to the tender, which has a coal rail. The model has been built to a reasonable standard. It is fitted with vacuum pipes, handrails, front and rear lamps and Peco or Hornby Dublo style couplings, which are showing signs of surface rust. There is a little glue residue around the coal rail, where it may have come adrift and then re-attached. I've had the model running and it performs smoothly at fast and slow speeds. And it feels powerful. I'm not sure what motor it has, but it is fitted with scale wheels and pick-ups on all six driving wheels and a pair of the tender wheels. The solder work on the chassis looks a bit on the heavy side, but viewing the model from above, it appears that a good construction job has been done. The paint finish is reasonable, although I think it could have been done better. It's an acceptable model - condition is B. It comes in its original box, which is in condition B.

K's, LMS Beyer-Garratt 2-6-6-2 Locomotive, No.7982 in LMS plain unlined black livery. This is a white metal kit that has been constructed to a reasonably good standard. It has twin motors and a good representation of the mechanical stoker that these locos were fitted with. This one has chain-link couplings. The numbering has been done to a good standard. The real locos were mostly allocated to Toton, working heavy coal trains in the Nottinghamshire coalfields. It really is a very large model. There might be further scope for some enhancements in terms of detailing. As it stands, it is a good representation of a distinctive and powerful class. I've had the loco running on the test-track in the workshop - and it is a good runner. It is very heavy, so its pulling power should be excellent.

The chassis appears to be a proprietary type of some description. The build quality is reasonable. It has sprung buffers and small modern-style Bachmann type couplings. The paint finish is very matt, which I suppose is very suitable for the model. There's some reasonable detail - handrails and things like that. An interesting model. Condition is B to B+. Unboxed.

K's, OO gauge white metal kit-built locomotive of the LNER P2 Class 2-8-2 Locomotive and Tender, No.2005 "Thane of Fife" in LNER lined apple green livery. Kit was introduced around 1977. This model is pulling, what looks to me, to be a Trix tender rather than a kit-built tender. I have had the loco running on the rolling road and it's off like a rocket, but I'm not sure how the pick-ups are wired - it might need some attention. But overall, I think it's a reasonable project. The paint finish is a little on the heavy side and build quality is not brilliant. I would grade the loco as B-, and the tender is pretty tatty as well. It comes in a non-original box.

It's in working order and is fitted with chain-link couplings - both to the loco and the tender. It has scale wheels and a scale-built chassis. The tender has additional pick-ups. Gem, 903 Class 4-6-0 Locomotive and Tender, No.903 "Cardean" in Caledonian Railway blue livery. The class was introduced on 1912 And handsome beasts they were too. The model has been made in quite a chunky way - it certainly looks the part and is very good-looking, particularly from the front end. The quality of workmanship is fair, but the quality of painting is not so good, unfortunately. It's been quite heavily painted and given quite a gelatinous coat of varnish, which is a shame because it really is a nice loco. The tender is the 8-wheeled version and the body is mounted on a Triang B12 chassis. The wheels have been painted blue to match the bodywork. Overall condition is B- to B. The loco is in working order.

Kit Built, this is a D21 Class 4-4-0 Locomotive and Tender, No. 1245 in plain unlined LNER black livery. Known under the North Eastern Railway as Class R1 they were built in Darlington in 1908/1909 and were a development of the Class D20 type. This kit is a very good runner, looks to me like a Tri-ang L1 style chassis but it is smooth and quiet. The body of the loco is die cast white metal and is very heavy. The build quality is reasonable and it is plain black so there is not much that can go wrong with that really, it looks the part. Could probably do with some back head detail to enhance the model slightly. With the exception of that it is an interesting subject reasonably well executed. I would grade it as a good condition B to B+.

The Q6 was a Vincent Raven design with the first one being made in 1913 or constructed in 1913. No. 3459 was the very last of the class. This model has been reasonably well constructed and reasonably well painted. It is actually very attractive and unusual motive power. If I was to be super critical there is a very slight undulation in the running plate, possibly more so on one side than the other but I suppose the essential criteria is does it look right, and it does, it certainly looks the part. Coal has been added to the tender. There is crew on the footplate. The tender is missing a coupling hook but apart from that though a very interesting model. I would grade it as condition B, possibly B to B+.

The construction is reasonable - there is good backhead detail, which is picked out - and the paint finish is middling to good, a little on the heavy side. It could be improved on - but it is a distinctive and elegant model. One the front steps is missing, and there is a small area of paint loss to the boiler side ( 5mm) I would grade its condition as B- to B. Unboxed.

It carries the later style emblem and has been fitted with Hornby Dublo style couplings and there is a crew fitted to the footplate. It is a heavy loco, it runs well. The build quality isn't too bad there has been real coal added to the bunker. The paint finish is pretty poor. Kit Built, Class 20 Bo-Bo Diesel Electric Type 1 Locomotive, No.D8059 in British Railways green livery with small yellow panel. The loco is fitted with discs. I'm not sure whether this model is kit-built or scratch-built, possibly the latter. It's not a bad job. It has a central motor driving both power bogies and it picks up on all four axles. It has sort of continental style couplings, although at one end there is no coupling and just buffer beam detail. You can see through the nose grilles, which is a very attractive feature. But there is something not quite right about the loco - whether the bogies are too small, or the loco body is a bit on the high side - I can't make my mind up. I would grade its condition as B to B+. Kit Built, Class Q4 0-8-0 Tender Locomotive, No. 3216 in plain unlined LNER black livery. Q4 was a Robinson Great Central design first introduced in 1902. No. 3216 was a Barnsley Locomotive. It is kit built, it is white metal on a kit built chassis. It is an extremely smooth runner, it has been geared to run quite slowly which is obviously correct for the class. Construction is reasonable and the paint job also is reasonable. Loco does have back head detail. Around the cab roof both at the front as you look at it from the smoke box end of the loco and round the sides there is a bit of glue residue, it is possible the cab roof has been reattached at some point I am not entirely sure, I would touch that up I think with black paint. It's a reasonably well-constructed model - although the painting is a little on the heavy side. The profiles aren't perfect, but they still give you a sense of the prototype. It picks up from all three axles and it runs nice and slowly. It has Hornby Dublo style couplings, one of which has come adrift from one end (it's in the box and would need to be re-attached). It appears to have a Triang motor and chromed wheels (initially I thought these were Triang, but I don't recall Triang making them like this). It actually runs quite well, although it is a little sticky - but a small amount of adjustment would result in it being an acceptable runner. The finish is not too bad, although the paint finish isn't so hot. The chassis is also loose under the body and would require a screw to hold it in place. Another point is that while the prototype was running, it would have been numbered 1687 and would not have sported the BR number that this model carries - although it's possible that it might have had the LMS on the side at the same time. A basic kit that's been built basically well - I would grade it as B- to B. Unboxed.

Kit Built, Class 15 Bo-Bo Diesel Electric Type 1 Locomotive, No.D8204 in British Railways early green livery with small yellow warning panels. Both ends of the vehicle carry the early disc-style train reporting method. It has sprung buffers and the later style BR crest. The model features see-through side grilles. It is a kit-built model of some description mounted on a Mehanotehnika chassis, which is Yugoslavian. It has continental style couplings, which loosely resemble Peco couplings, and buffer bar detail. The paint job has been reasonable well executed - and the result is actually quite a nice-looking model. Condition B

Kit Built, Class 73 Bo-Bo Electro-Diesel Locomotive, No. E6038 in British Railways early electric blue style livery with small yellow warning panels. This is a kit built locomotive, it has die cast metal bogie frames and under body detail. Not too sure what kit it is, it appears to have a brass style roof and maybe plastic body sides. It has got Hornby bogies but metal bogie frames, not a bad job. The lining around the window frames is a little bit scrappy, it would probably benefit from a slight repaint. Overall condition is B. It is unboxed, curious item.

Kit Built, London and North Western Railway 4-4-2 Tank Locomotive, No.653 in LNWR lined black livery. From its weight, I would suggest this is probably white metal. It has a kit or scratch built chassis with a powerful Triang type motor. It's a good runner, but it will only run at what are prototypical speeds - it's quite slow but very smooth. I don't know who painted the loco but it has been done to a professional standard - a very nice job indeed. It has chain-link couplings and the window frames are picked out in brass. It's an impressive and powerful-looking model. Overall condition is B+. It is unboxed.

Kit Built, GWR 0-6-0 Pannier Tank Locomotive, No.L89 in "London Transport" lined maroon livery. This is a rather nice model. It has been well constructed and well detailed. It has coal in the bunker, sprung buffers and is completely lined out in the yellow lining that the London Transport locos carried. Quality of construction is good. It's a smooth runner and runs at prototypical speeds and it appears to have a flywheel-style mechanism because it runs on when the power is turned off. Overall, it's an attractive model. The paint job is reasonable and I would describe it as effective. I would grade the model as B+.

Kit Built, LNWR 18inch Web 0-6-2 Tank Locomotive, No. 2357 in plain unlined LNWR black. The model is in working order, if a little noisy. It has a kit built chassis, it is nice and heavy white metal, standard of construction is reasonable, I have seen better but it captures the essence of the prototype reasonably well. The paint finish is a little heavy handed perhaps, overall condition is B. Interesting subject matter though.

Kitbuilt, 0-4-0 Diesel Shunter Locomotive, this is a brass kit which has been constructed and is finished in pale blue with a circular logo to the cab sides, the buffer beams are painted in red, it is fitted with sprung buffers and couplings which are similar to Hornby Dublo or Peco. It is in good running order, it has a good quantity of detail including handles for the bonnet panels and handrails, chimney etc. I am not entirely sure what the prototype is supposed to be, it is an industrial shunter, similar examples could be found all over the UK. The construction is reasonable, there is a very slight air gap between the top of the cab and the cab roof and there are a couple of spots or marks on the glazing on one side but still interesting. I would grade it as condition B, it is a fine runner.

Its currently not working, I have tried it but haven't got a peep out of it although it is probably something and nothing. Interesting subject matter. Condition is B. Its unboxed, or non original box.

Kit Built, Princess Royal Class 4-6-2 Locomotive and Tender, No.6202 in LMS plain maroon livery. This is the prototype loco from the LMS known as "The Turbomotive" with the unique turbine drive. It's certainly an interesting loco to look at, although I think it spoils the fine lines of the Princess Royal Class, but that's just a personal opinion. The construction has been well executed and reasonably well painted. Not a bad model at all really. It has fine scale wheels. I've had it running and its movement is a little jerky so it would probably require a small amount of attention to make it a smooth runner. With the current configuration, the tender is permanently coupled and wired for tender pick-up. I would grade the model's condition as B+. Box condition is B.

Kit Built, Class 08 Diesel Shunter Locomotive, No.D3514 in British Railways green livery with black and yellow hazard stripes. This is kit-built model of the popular shunter. It has a metal chassis, pick-ups to all six wheels, and brake detail. It's been reasonably well constructed, although the paint is a little on the heavy side. It's actually quite a detailed model. The body is a little loose on the chassis, but it's an extremely good runner and will go down to very low speeds. Depending on how you view it, it's possible that the chassis has a slight bow in it - I'm not sure if it's my eyes deceiving me or whether it is actually bowed. It has Hornby Dublo style couplings fitted. Overall, I would describe its condition as B. It's an interesting model, and wouldn't look too bad on any layout. Comes in an original box, which is also condition B.

Kit Built, Class 17 Bo-Bo Diesel Electric Type 1 Locomotive, No.D8530 in British Railways two-tone green livery with black roof. Model has small yellow warning panels and headcodes that read 8E45 and 8M38. It is a reasonable attempt at this loco. It has individual grilles fitted to the bonnet sides which are completely see-through - very prototypical; the paint job is not too bad, except perhaps the light green could have been applied slightly better. Overall, I would grade the model as a reasonable B. It is unboxed. I'm not sure what the chassis is - but both bogies are driven, so it must have some central motor, I'd imagine. An interesting model. It comes unboxed.

Kit Built, 0-6-0 Tank Locomotive, not entirely sure of the class it sort of vaguely resembles a LNWR web style coal tank with the tall chimney. It is unnumbered, it is actually a hand made or kit built chassis as well which is a brass chassis. The model is quiet and an extremely smooth runner. The construction is reasonable, it has a reasonable amount of detail. The paint finish is a little on the heavy side, that is really the only drawback but it is white metal and I am sure you could strip that back and perhaps repaint it with a better quality finish. It think from the running capabilities it would be worth doing so. Overall condition is B. It has wire loop style couplings.

It's ready to be painted and is in working order. It has a brass chassis, which is in good order. It has been put together reasonably well - I think the chimney might be a little skew-whiff, but apart from that it's not a bad job. I would grade its condition as B- to B. This is a scratch-built model of an interesting subject that has been reasonably well executed - it certainly captures the feel of the prototype. It has crew fitted and it utilises a Hornby tender drive. The loco has a brass chassis and appears to be free running. Not a subject frequently modelled. I would grade its condition as B. It comes in a Bachmann box, which I would grade as B also.

Kit Built, Duke Class 4-4-0 Locomotive and Tender, No.9084 "Isle of Jersey" in Great Western unlined green livery with 'Great Western' to the tender sides. This is a white metal kit built loco with what looks like a brass chassis. It is in full working order. It has been reasonably well constructed although it is a little lumpy here and there and perhaps the paint finish could have been slightly more professionally applied. But you get a good impression of the prototype pretty much. On one side of the loco where the hubs attach to the wheel shafts, there's a little solder to the motion - so this will probably need to be addressed. Lamps and handrails have been fitted and there's a shovel in the tender, which carries real coal. It's an interesting model that looks the part. It's in a non-original box.

Kit Built, Kirtley 2-4-0 Locomotive and Tender, No.67 in Midland Railway lined maroon livery. This design of this loco was around about the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, and the locos were later re-built by Johnson. The model is a good example of kit building - it's been well constructed and well painted and is beautifully lined. It's in working order and has a custom chassis and scale wheels. The model is fitted with sprung buffers. Possibly the only criticism I would level is that the bosses on the motion are a little over-soldered, but really that is something that can be addressed. The armature of the motor and part of the magnet protrude into the cab area. The Midland Railway produced some beautiful locomotives and this is a fine model of one of them. Condition is B to B+. Comes in a non-original box.

Kit Built, 0-6-0 Tender Locomotive, No.12551 in LMS unlined plain black livery. This is a partially-finished white metal kit loco. It appears to have finescale wheels on, what looks to me, a Triang chassis with something like an X03 or X04 style motor. The quality of the construction is reasonable although the paint job is a little on the unprofessional side and the black finish is just a little wishy-washy - it could definitely do with a re-paint. Also, the tender has no wheels. But in all other respects, the model is complete, although the chassis is not currently working. The body is loose on the chassis. There are one or two parts that come with the model. Overall condition is B-.

It doesn't have a chassis and doesn't have a motor at all, which it would require to finish. It also needs painting. It's missing some of its detailing like handrails etc, but it could be the basis of something interesting. The footplate appears to be slightly warped but that might be correct - I'm really not sure. I would describe it as condition B-. Requires a lot of work. Box condition B.

Kit Built, etched brass kit-built model of an 0-4-0 Rushton Hornsby Diesel Mechanical Shunter, which appears to be un-numbered, in grey livery with red buffer beams. The loco has Hornby Dublo style couplings. It's loosely based on several very similar Rushton Hornsby locos, including Departmental no.83 and Departmental no.DS1169. It's a tiny loco. It does run, although it's a little jerky at slow speeds - it probably just needs a little lubrication. The paint finish is a little on the heavy side, but the construction is reasonable. There has, perhaps, been some detailing on the buffer beams, which has been taken off leaving a couple of marks that would need to be addressed. Still, a very unusual subject - perhaps one to tuck away at the back of the shed somewhere.

The boiler, cab, chassis and running plate are mostly complete. The rest of the loco isn't, and I can see no evidence in the parts of any tender components, so it may well be that its missing. Hard to assess the quality of the build so far, as it's so early into it. Inevitably, there will be some parts missing.

Ten of the prototype were built, all of which were allocated to the Liverpool and Birkenhead area, and withdrawn in 1967. The model has been finished to a reasonable standard, although the painting is a little on the heavy side. It has pick-up from all three axles. It's a good runner and runs extremely slowly. One of the most noticeable things about it, which I like, is the fact that the front grills on the long bonnet are completely see-through, you can see through to the other side of the loco - very prototypical.
